We have a DVD player in our Odyssey, with the usage varying with the month. Sometimes we use it all the time…because we live on the edge of town, anywhere we go takes at least 20 minutes to get to. And then other times the kids aren’t interested or forget about it for a couple months.
This January has been all about watching They Might Be Giants “Here Comes the ABC’s” (which is why I’ve blabbed about them quite a bit lately). Sassy Princess climbs in her seat and yells out, “ABC DVD!!! ABC DVD!!!”
I attribute this to her recent discovery of letters everywhere we go. When we pass Walmart she exclaims, “I see a W!!!!”. M is for McDonalds, T is for Target, and when she sits at the table eating cereal she’ll happily chirp about the letters on the box. It’s such an exciting discovery, and she’s so happy when she recognizes them. The first time around, with the Naturalist, I was so intent (and a little impatient) on teacher her the letters that I didn’t fully appreciate the simple pleasure of a girl noticing an “E” for the first time. I am enjoying watching Sassy create her own relationship with all these symbols that have magically appeared before her eyes. Thanks to TMBG, now she’ll even caption her pictures.
