Free time.

I decided to write up a list of things to do while enjoying 4 days all. by. myself. I divided it up into things I needed to do (clean/organize/throw away) and things I wanted to do (lounge around/read/watch movies/nap in the hammock/sleep in) and then I planned on doing a little bit of each list every day.

On Monday, while on my way outside to lay in the hammock I was sidetracked by my bed, where I lay down and looked at the ceiling. I didn’t turn on the TV, didn’t watch a movie, didn’t open a book. I just listened to the sound of quiet and thought in real, actual, complete sentences. It was such a novel experience that I did it for 2 hours. Then I thought, since I was already in prime movie watching position, that I would pull up “Into the Wild” on comcast. It looked like a movie I’d really like: boy gives away everything and the life that was planned for him to make his own way in the wild of Alaska. Turns out, I hated it and turned it off halfway through. Am I the only one who didn’t like it? I always feel so self conscious when I don’t like popular movies. So then I sat around and thought more complete thoughts in a cocoon of silence.

Tuesday I made it to the DMV since hubby pointed out that my license had expired, like, last year. It was a lovely experience, considering that I very well could have been stuck in the line, at the DMV, with 3 kids, for hours and hours. Even though I forgot my book, I played games for the first time on my cell phone and taught myself how to text message! Yay! I’m now in the 21st century with the rest of the texting world!

For lunch, I took myself out to a lovely little place I didn’t know existed. Somewhere where they serve all kinds of noodle dishes in all kinds of styles? And did you know it’s possible to eat a meal without pulling kids out from under the table, or cleaning up spills, or hearing whining about how there’s nothing. to. eat! I just sat and ate my pad thai and hot coconut soup while texting hubby things like, “It’s so quiet!” “I’m eating noodles! Alone!” and “Did I tell you how quiet it is?”

Then I met Ashley up at some great Outlet stores. It was our almost last hurrah before she moves away. We walked around, ate a little bit, and laughed our way through our favorite shops. J.Crew had some great stuff, but the deals of the day came at Ralph Lauren. They had the stuff made for the outlet store, but on their clearance rack Ash and I managed to find some returns from the retail store. Amazing ski jacket originally priced at $250 but ticketed at $50?! Wheee! A super cute blue and white striped blazer originally priced at $400 but ticketed at $55?! I almost passed out. We celebrated our amazing finds by slurping down chocolate shakes from Chick Fil A.

Today I woke up at 6 but promptly went back to sleep and slept it. It’s now 10, and I haven’t even gotten out of bed, but I have watched a couple hours of Nat. Geo and History Channel.

To recap:

things I’ve done off my “Need To Do” list: 1
things I’ve done off my “Want To Do” list: 34589394587 (especially the things that include staying in my jammies).

I’m hoping that my self indulgence is something that hubby loves about me.

  1. Noodles & Company is the greatest! I used to go there all the time when I lived in Minnesota.

  2. Oh wow – I am so jealous of your free time!!!! Enjoy 🙂

  3. hey – with that free time – help me figure out how to load pics!! I have no idea what I’m doing wrong…I follow the directions, but pics never show up I get this white box, and thats it. UGH! How do you get your pics to load????

  4. Wow, that sounds nice. And I can’t believe you haven’t been to Noodles before! That place rocks! 🙂
I’d looooove to have some free time, with my three guys out of the house. Doesn’t happen very often.

  5. Waaaaaah! Hear me crying over here? Somehow, my husband gets all the free time in the house. I take the kids away for a couple of days at a time with activities. He knows this is an issue for me, yet I still haven’t had alone time in, oh, say, 15 years?

Enjoy no doing things on the need to do list!

  6. Wow. I wouldn’t know what to do if I had even 2 hours of free time/no child time. I bet it IS quiet! I remember eating (actually eating, not just helping everyone else eat and then shoving everything quickly in the garbage as kids skip off to the door) at a restaurant! 😉 But sleep? Now THAT sounds heavenly. Sweet!

  7. Catching up on my blog reading and felt the need to congratulate you on your enjoyment of your alone time! I periodically take a weekend to myself at our beach house and love it, although 2 days really does not seem like enough time. 4 days would be wonderful..enough to be relaxed and not feel like you need to cram too much into each day, but short enough so that I did not start missing the boys too much!

As it is, I am looking forward to about 24 hrs on my own tonight as the boys are heading over to a friend’s for a sleep over…
