Christmas Vignettes

Or, a quick look into how our holidays are going:

How To Explain Why Santa Isn’t Bringing Lots of Presents (without saying “Recession”).

I informed Naturalist that due to our super awesome trip to Disneyworld, the state of the economy, and the fact that Hubby was out of work for a few months during the summer, (and my new camera…but I feel guilty enough about it already–I don’t want to add ‘taking presents away from my kids’ to the list), “Santa” would be giving one gift per kid. I asked her if she would help be a good example to the other two by having a good attitude and not complaining about the dearth of presents under the tree.

She thought for a bit.

Then she said, “Mom, I’ll tell them that Global Warming isn’t just affecting the Polar Bears, but Santa’s workshops, too. I’ll say that the rise in temperatures is flooding most of Santa’s warehouses, he’s had to move out of his house, and that’s why there’s not a lot of presents this year.”

So. There you go. Once the kids get over the horror of drowning elves and ruined presents, I think it will make perfect sense.

Trimming the Tree.

shiny ornaments.

Every morning and afternoon, Sassy gathers up all the ornaments that I’ve put on the tree. She stands on the couch to reach the ones up high. Once she has them all on the ground, she redistributes them back on the tree, placing them all on her level. As you can imagine, this really bottom loads the tree and leaves the (plastic) branches rather bare up top. When she goes to bed I redistribute them back uniformly on the tree. She wakes up the next morning and it all starts back over again. I suppose I could stop and just let the tree stay how she likes it, but it’s kinda fun trimming the tree every day.

Better Deluxe Hot Chocolate.

Deluxe Hot Chocolate

Last November, I blogged about my recipe for Deluxe Hot Chocolate. This year, we’ve added a step between #2 and #3. And this step would be….add in a huge scoop of vanilla bean ice cream after you pour the hot chocolate into the cup but before you stir in the marshmallows. Mmmmmm!

Oh, The Weather Outside is Frightful!

Icicle on rose

Colorado has had some great snowstorms blow through. It’s been beautiful (if not arctic cold…I guess Santa can move down here) and lots of fun for the kids. I love looking out the window and seeing Sassy peering in, looking for a playmate and snowball target.

"Come play outside with me!"

Outside looking in.

So, that’s a small glimpse into what’s going on over here. How’s everything going in your neck of the woods?
