Listening in the quiet moments.

The fog is rolling in here at Huntington Beach. I can’t see the ocean in the moonglow, I can only hear it wash in and out over and over.

I love the sound of the waves crashing-I used to have a white noise machine with other settings on it, I’d always use either the ocean sound or the rainstorm one. You can imagine my happy when the first night in the RV I heard both for real. Another gift from the Universe, who knows me so well.

However, I’ve never stayed so close to the sea before, and I find myself wondering if I’m listening to the tides roll in and out, or to an approaching tsunami coming to carry me away. It’s unsettling, but the relaxing sound always wins out and lulls me to sleep.

I hear Naturalist flipping pages in the new paperback she bought. Every page read and turned is music to my ears. Her dyslexia makes literacy something I don’t take for granted, especially knowing how hard she works for it. I’m happy that we gave her the time and space to develop her love of stories by not forcing a curriculum or timeline on her.

I can hear Sassy 5 feet away, snuggling with Frito and belly laughing. She has been my buddy through this whole experience, she’s vibed on both the good and stressful times…I’m glad we’ve had some great days searching for ocean treasures. She also likes to people watch and draw in the sand-a perfect beach partner!

My world has shrunk so that I’m mostly hearing those two things, my family and the ocean. Whoever said you can’t go back to the womb again has never tried to fit 5 people in a 30 foot RV. Because that’s what I feel like in here….like we’re all gestating and waiting to be reborn as changed people with a different family dynamic. I can see it happening, feel it, already. We have no TV, no Internet, no space of our own. We just have each other and wherever we happen to be at the time. This week it’s the beach. In another week, who knows!

I’d thought the biggest part of this journey would be getting rid of 4700 square feet of stuff in our old house, but I was wrong. The adventure has only just begun!

  1. Looks amazing, but a little bit scary too….

But to fall asleep to the sound of the ocean 🙂

  2. I’d miss the internet – it’s my little (large) community now – but I imagine with this adventure, there isn’t really time to miss it.

Love that under the pier photo 🙂

  3. Oh, Tiff, that is the most beautiful post. Ever. I love it, and envy you. Enjoy your womb time and I’m so excited to see what you will all be reborn as.
You brought tears to my eyes. Savor every moment of this experience. Someday you may be back in the hustle and bustle of everyday life but for now, you are living in the NOW!!!!

    • That’s the trick, isn’t it? to savor the moments, even when you’re in the middle of thinking, ‘what the heck is going on?!’ lol.

xoxo to a real gestating woman! How are you feeling? Are you savoring the moments too?

  4. That photo of the bridge reminds me so much of my childhood days. And right now Siva has to do a project on sea treasures. And as always you are correctly timed. Is this also a message from the universe ? I wonder !

And you said it correct Tiffany, Whenever I see my son reading, ( and nowadays he pores over books) my heart swells with pride and joy and my eyes well up. I never thought he will ever read on his own. And even now it is difficult for him to read aloud. But he WORKS HARD !

My regards and love to Naturalist .She is the one who gives me the courage and confidence to believe in my son, no matter whatever he does!

I can never thank her and you enough. Now we have settled with our ways and Siva is most comfortable. I even tell him that I miss bullying him 😀

    • The Universe…she’s pretty sly like that! 😉

Sassy and I have been collecting sea treasures, if you email me your address (tiffbear @ gmail . com) I’ll send Siva some from the Pacific Ocean. Wouldn’t that be fun?! Pen pals! 🙂

  5. I see peace in your face, Tiff. You are exactly where you need to be.

      • Busy! But does that iphone thingy of yours work for making phone calls or just blog posts? lol

We’ll work something out- that Friday?

      • LOL. iPhone for phone calls?!?! That’s ridiculous! 😛

      • Thought so! Who needs it anyway when we can play comment tag on your blog?! 🙂 This is so much more suspenseful.

      • LOL

Suspenseful…will they or won’t they ever meet up?! Stay tuned… 🙂

      • Ha! And those are the Days of Our Lives. No, no, wait! The Young and the Restless?

Oh, let’s be honest, this is clearly a case of The Bold and The Beautiful.

You’re going to Dragontree today? Have fun! Just two days ago I was thinking about all the links I could send you but I didn’t because I was afraid of looking like a stalker. 😉 So I’m glad you found that park day- lots of great families there!

      • Oh send me the links! And yes I’m at dragontree right now, we’re all enjoying it!

  7. Hi!
I am so loving your pictures. I live with my unschooling family of 5 in Huntington Beach. So fun to see our little beachy city through your eyes (and your camera lens). Make sure you take your kids to see the tide pools. There are good ones at Dana Point and at Crystal Cove. You will see amazing things – Sea stars, anemones, sea cucumbers and more. Also, this week we have (I’m sure you’ve noticed) a lot of bamboo on the beach. These are fun for building things on the beach and can also, if you’re into it, be used for making flutes. Write me if you want more local info.
